What is a traditional interview with a recruiter like?

It’s important to note that depending on what type of recruiter you speak with, your interview process might look very different. There are two types: the internal, and the external. Recruiters that work for staffing agencies are considered “external” recruiters, and the recruiters that work for the company, are called “internal” recruiters.

A typical interview with an external recruiter might last about 15-30 minutes, where they ask you questions about yourself and your career goals, to see if they can move you into an interview process for a job they’re working on now, or keep you in mind for future roles. Questions you might are :

  1. Tell me about yourself (career specific)

  2. Do you have experience with : (and then they will rattle off various UX skills)

  3. Have you worked in an Agile work enviornment?

  4. Do you have experience with ADA, accessibility standards, etc?

  5. Tell me about a project you’ve completed end-to-end

  6. What are your salary goals?

  7. Do you prefer contract or full time?

  8. We have a job for you in mind, can you let me know if it sounds like something you’d be interested in?

  9. What do you want to get from your next role?

  10. Why did you leave your previous role?

  11. How far are you you in your job search? Beginning? Any final offers coming?

  12. What industries do you want to work in? What industries would you like to avoid?

  13. What tools do you use for your UX work?

How much do I pay a recruiter to help me get a job?

$0. Free. Nothing. You never ever pay. A recruiter is different from a headhunter to whom you would be paying for getting you a role. However, recruiters get compensated by the company for placing you. If a recruiter is asking you for a sign-up fee or an income-share, you might need to take a step back and think carefully about this person’s background and intentions.

Can the recruiter ask me how money I make currently?
